DOGE says it terminated leases of 3 Bay Area-based federal agencies ...Middle East

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) said it terminated leases for three federal agencies based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Led by billionaire and tech mogul Elon Musk, DOGE aims to slash government spending and consolidate the federal workforce through firings.

The DOGE website includes a "Wall of Receipts" that lists real estate leases, contracts, and grants axed so far by the initiative. As of Tuesday, the following Bay Area offices' leases have been terminated:

U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park: "$9 million in savings," according to DOGE.

The sprawling campus served as a hub for scientists from a wide range of USGS programs, including: Earthquake Science Center; Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics; Pacific Coastal and Marine Science; Center Volcano Science Center; Water Mission Area; and Western Geographic Science Center. All of the USGS' scientists moved from Menlo Park to Moffett Field in Mountain View in 2024. Government officials decided to sell the USGS Menlo Park campus five years ago.

Internal Revenue Service office in San Mateo: "$746,994 in savings."

Taxpayers could get in-person help at this IRS taxpayer assistance center.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission office in San Jose: "$1.2 in savings."

The EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of factors such as a person's race, color, religion, gender, or disability. The EEOC has the authority to investigate charges of discrimination.

‘Mindless firings’ hit federal ag employees in California

In addition to terminating real estate contracts, DOGE is also cutting funding for federal agencies. The five agencies hit hardest by funding cuts are: General Services Administration, Department of Education, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Labor, and Office of Personnel Management.

Musk said the goal of his DOGE team is to reduce the national debt by rapidly rooting out financial waste and fraud. "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect. But when we make mistakes we will fix it very quickly," he said.
