Michael Fiddelke, CFO of Target, said in an earnings call: “We’ve invested in more staffing at our self-checkout lanes, and made changes to speed up the self-checkout process and our guests are telling its working.

“I’ll highlight one of many examples. Our guest satisfaction for speed of checkout has risen to its highest level in more than three years.

“We know how hard it is to move those numbers, and we couldn’t be prouder of our team’s progress.

“But our aspirations don’t end there.

“That’s why in 2025 you’ll see me and our chief stores officer focused on this progress to help our team deliver a more consistently excellent guest experience.

“Now I know it won’t be perfect in every store at every hour of every day but I know I speak for Adrian when I say we aspire to be, and I am confident that we’ll build on this momentum with another step forward in 2025.”

Lots of customers complain about the lines at self-checkouts, even though they were put in place to make the shopping experience more convenient for customers.

The US Sun recently covered one such complaint which accused Target’s checkout policy of creating lines of 15 plus people on busy nights.

But those in charge didn’t appear wiling to change that policy.

Some local stores have rolled out checkout policies, but closing self-service by 8pm, as per Business Insider.

One customer was furious about their experience at the checkouts, according to an X thread.

And, they seemed to be confused by the decision of the store chiefs.

The shopper posted on the social media platform: “With 15+ people in the line on a busy Friday evening, why are your fast checkout booths turned off on purpose?”

The shopper shared a picture from the store which showed self-checkout machines out of action.

A Target spokesperson responded to the shopper’s frustrations.

They replied: “We’re prioritizing full-service check lanes to support our guests during the entire day and intend to open Express Self-Checkout to support busier times.

“We’ll be sure to share your feedback.”

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

Chiefs explained their decision to stick by self-checkouts in a company statement.

It read: “Self-checkout was twice as fast at our pilot stores.

“By having the option to pick self-checkout for a quick trip, or a traditional, staffed lane when their cart is full, guests who were surveyed told us the overall checkout experience was better, too.”

Express checkout lanes have been rolled out in almost 2,000 stores.
