A man faces a pair of felony charges after police found him with nearly 50 grams of cocaine and a stolen handgun during a traffic stop in earlier this year in Greeley.
Police arrested 38-year-old Jacinto Delacruz-Torres in late January, after officers originally pulled him over for driving a vehicle with a modified muffler and dark tint, according to an affidavit for his arrest.
He faces charges of intent to distribute a controlled substance and a special offender charge for possessing the handgun, as well as a pair of tickets for driving without a license and the loud muffler, according to Colorado court records.
About 4:50 p.m. Jan. 24, Greeley police were patrolling near 10th Street and 28th Avenue when they noticed Delacruz-Torres’ gray Jeep.
Officers pulled him over in the 2700 block of 8th Avenue, and he was unable to provide a driver’s license, registration or proof of insurance — only giving officers a Mexican passport, according to the affidavit.
Police searched De La Cruz-Torres in both a state and a national database and found a warrant for his arrest out of Larimer County on suspicion of racketeering and distributing narcotics as part of an organized crime group, according to court records.
While searching the Jeep, police reported finding a black “purse-type bag” in the center console. Inside, officers recovered a handgun that had been reported stolen out of Clovis, New Mexico, according to the affidavit.
Also inside the bag were five bags of suspected cocaine, police say. Two small bags each weighed roughly one gram each, while three larger bags weighed roughly 14 grams each, according to the affidavit.
The bags were weighed at the Greeley Police Department, totaling 47.9 grams. The affidavit did not indicate whether the substance tested presumptive positive for cocaine.
Police booked De La Cruz-Torres into the Weld County Jail, where he was released the next day on a personal recognizance bond, in which De La Cruz-Torres’ didn’t pay any money, with his signature instead serving as a promise to appear at all future court dates.
He has an advisement hearing April 1 in Weld District Court.
