A man who allegedly killed his mother in El Cajon and then led police on a chase with her body inside the car was behind bars Wednesday, police said.
Richard Anthony Leyva, 24, was arrested after the black Hyundai Sonata he allegedly was fleeing in crashed into several other vehicles in the 500 block of North Mollison Avenue, according to the El Cajon Police Department.
The events that led to the arrest began shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, when Leyva’s brother made an emergency call to report that he had found his mother, Jamison Webster, 51, dead inside her car at a Montrose Court motel where the suspect was staying, Lt. Nick Sprecco said.
North Mollison Avenue“Investigators have determined that an altercation then happened between the two brothers,” the lieutenant said. “(Richard) Leyva got into the Hyundai and drove off, striking his brother in the process. The brother was uninjured.”
When patrol personnel caught up with the suspect a short time later, he refused to yield and fled into Spring Valley before doubling back and crashing near El Cajon Valley High School, according to police.
Officers took Leyva into custody after subduing him with an electric stun gun. They then discovered the body of his mother inside her car, authorities said.
The other motorists involved in the pileup suffered no injuries.
Detectives are continuing to investigate what led to the woman’s death, authorities said.
The suspect was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday.
