Trey Smith and the Chicago Bears: A Perfect Fit in Free Agency ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bears have an abundance of cap space with General Manager Ryan Poles calling the shots as he tries to fulfill the vision of Ben Johnson, the team’s new head coach. Filling Chicago’s offseason needs in free agency will go a long way toward getting this team back into the postseason hunt. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the more promising and available targets to see if there’s a fit for the Bears in 2025.

Existing Rumors and Bears Connections

There’s been no shortage of conversation linking Smith to the Bears in recent weeks. During the Super Bowl weekend Luis directed Bears fans eyes to Smith ahead of the big game, and since then, we’ve learned through various reports that while the Chiefs don’t expect to use the franchise or transition tag on Smith, they do intend to make a run at re-signing him.

And last week, one ESPN analyst dubbed the Bears as the best fit for Smith (if he departs Kansas City), which really shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Possible Contract Considerations

PFF has Smith’s projected contract at four years, $82 million, with an AAV of $20.5 million per year. As of today, Chicago has $69.92 million in effective cap space to attack their needs with this offseason (the fourth most in the league), and if they can land Smith in that ballpark, they shouldn’t blink. Personally, I would go as far as $23-24 million if that’s what it took to pry him away from a perennial Super Bowl contender in Kansas City.

Even to that end, the Bears would be left with roughly $46 million in effective cap space to address the rest of their needs, and that’s before potential cuts and savings that will occur in the coming weeks. Sure, it’s a hefty price tag, but Smith is a player who can anchor the right side of the interior offensive line for the next four seasons.

The Fit

This one fits like a glove. The Chicago Bears desperately need a top-tier guard this offseason, and Trey Smith is lined up to be the hands-down top offensive lineman on the market. In four seasons with the Chiefs, Smith has started 80 of 81 possible games (including the playoffs) at right guard. He’s been an elite run blocker who has developed every season as a pass blocker, finishing 2024 with zero sacks allowed and a minuscule 4.0 percent pressure rate.

There is some belief that Kansas City will prioritize keeping their stalwart right guard in town a priority before free agency opens in two weeks, and that should come as no surprise. However, if Smith hits the open market, he’s going to be the most-courted free agent available, and if Chicago really wants to prove it is for real, then the Bears should back the Brinks truck up for Smith and solidify the interior of their offensive line with a guard who hasn’t even entered his prime.

There has been some conversation about potentially spending less on someone like Mekhi Becton, and while that wouldn’t be the worst possible outcome, it would be something we’re so conditioned to as Bears fans. But until the Chiefs spoil the idea of Smith coming to Chicago, let’s not overthink this one. As much of a no-brainer as Ben Johnson was, Smith should be the first phone call the Bears make in free agency.
