SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Thousands of University of California employees in the Bay Area are hitting the picket line Wednesday. This is part of a statewide strike involving 60,000 UC workers claiming unfair labor practices.
The group, represented by University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said they are in the middle of a staffing crisis that is impacting students, hospital patients and research done by the university.
UPTE claims they’ve been working without a contract since October and have been negotiating for eight months. The unions are calling for proper staffing and better wages.
San Francisco employees required to work in office 4 days per weekThe strike will get underway at UC campuses, hospitals and labs across the state. In the Bay Area, picket lines have been organized at UC Berkeley and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
Organizers said the strike, which began at 7 a.m. Wednesday, is expected to continue through Friday.
The University of California said it’s “disappointed” about the strike. “We have offered each union meaningful wage increases, healthcare premium reductions and other offers to directly address the issues they’ve indicated are important to their members,” the university said in a statement.
UC said it is working to reduce the strike's impact on patients, students and staff.
