ODOT tackles safety concerns at busy Post Road intersection ...Middle East

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A portion of a massive road project between Dublin and Plain City has become the subject of online concerns and backlash from drivers who questioned its safety.

In a social media post, one motorist described the scary situations he has encountered at the Post Road and Hyland-Croy Road intersection.

“I’m not sure who approved the final traffic pattern because the lanes are offset at the intersection westbound after the new off-ramp was built,” the poster wrote. “I have been in the left lane heading west on post road and have almost been hit (sideswiped) by someone driving in the middle lane TWICE.”

Dozens of commenters echoed his frustrations, calling it confusing and dangerous and noting that they contacted the Ohio Department of Transportation regarding the problems.

“I have emailed [ODOT] twice about this intersection because I feel like I’m the only one who knows the far left lane goes straight and gets the lane that the 'left middle' lane thinks is still theirs,” one person wrote. “Lots of people try to 'stick it' to the people using the far left lane because they are so sure they are wrong.”

“I've seen two accidents there already,” wrote another commenter. “Additionally, when the turn lanes going west on Post off 161 and the lights off HC to turn east on Post occur, there will be people that run into each other head-on.”

The public information officer for ODOT's District 6, Matthew McGuire, confirmed the office has received public inquiries about the intersection, with people relaying that “vehicles traveling westbound on Post Road seem to be struggling to remain in their assigned lane.”

McGuire noted that cold weather delayed the installation of additional striping and pavement markings to improve the flow, but the work was finally completed on Feb. 10. He shared a diagram of the final striping configuration in the project plans.

“While the dotted lines added are specifically delineating turning movements through the intersection, note the convergence of the two dotted lines from the 33 off-ramp and Hyland-Croy on the center lane … which should aid vehicles traveling west on Post Road with identifying each through lane as they cross the intersection,” McGuire wrote in an email to NBC4.

Additionally, McGuire said the project team would watch the area to see if the updates eliminate the issue.

“If the issue persists, we will re-evaluate and make additional adjustments,” wrote McGuire. “We are also looking to add an additional lane assignment sign in the median, mirroring the current one placed on the right shoulder.”

According to McGuire, ODOT still needs to rebuild the long ramps from State Route 161 and Post Road to US 33, along with the final surface paving. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
