Newcastle 4-3 Nottingham Forest Stats: Magpies Survive Second-Half Scare To Edge Seven-Goal Thriller ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

St James’ Park was the stage for a classic ‘game of two halves’ as Newcastle edged a seven-goal thriller. Look back on the game with the best facts and Opta data in our Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest stats page.

Four goals in 11 frantic first-half minutes ultimately proved enough for Newcastle United to secure a 4-3 victory over Nottingham Forest in a pulsating contest at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak struck twice, bringing up his 50th Premier League goal in the process. Reaching the milestone in just his 76th appearance, the Swedish striker became the seventh-fastest player in history to hit that landmark.

Callum Hudson-Odoi had given Forest an early lead, and the visitors fought back in the second half with two late goals that created a tense finale.

But they couldn’t quite find an equaliser with Newcastle’s explosive first-half performance enough to see them claim all three points. A win here moves them up to fifth in the table, which could potentially be enough for a Champions League qualification spot.

Hudson-Odoi, making his first start in over a month, punished Newcastle’s early sloppiness. A loose throw-in from Tino Livramento put Jacob Murphy under pressure, allowing Hudson-Odoi to pounce and curl a stunning strike from outside the box beyond Nick Pope

Lewis Miley, handed his first Premier League start of the season, equalised when he reacted quickest to a loose ball in the area following a set-piece. His left-footed shot found its way through a crowded box and past Matz Sels.

Just minutes later, the hosts were in front. Lewis Hall drove down the left after linking up with Isak, and his cross was bundled home by Murphy at the back post. Another Hall delivery from the left struck the arm of Ola Aina. Isak stepped up and converted the resulting penalty.

The Swedish forward struck again moments later. Latching onto a through ball from Joe Willock, Isak’s shot took a deflection on its way past Sels, securing his 50th Premier League goal and cementing his place as the competition’s highest-scoring Swedish player, surpassing Freddie Ljungberg’s tally of 48.

After Newcastle’s first-half blitz, the game lost its intensity as Eddie Howe’s side dropped deeper, inviting Forest forward. The visitors capitalised on their growing momentum, pulling a goal back through Nikola Milenković.

With Newcastle retreating, Anthony Elanga’s late corner caused havoc in the penalty area before falling to substitute Ryan Yates, who reacted quickest to poke the ball into the net, setting up a nervy finish.

Despite the late drama, Newcastle held on for a crucial win that keeps them firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest: Post-Match Stats

Nottingham Forest have lost three of their last four Premier League games (W1), as many as their previous 16 beforehand (W11 D2 L3). The Tricky Trees have lost three successive away games in the competition for the first time since December 2023. Nottingham Forest were only the sixth side ever to go 1-0 up in a Premier League game but then trail by 3+ goals at half-time, after Wimbledon v Aston Villa in February 1995, Newcastle v Man Utd in April 2003, Norwich v Aston Villa in March 2014, Arsenal v Liverpool in December 2018, and Man Utd v Tottenham in October 2020. Lewis Miley’s goal (aged 18) assisted by Lewis Hall (aged 20) was the first time Newcastle had a Premier League goal both scored and assisted by players aged 20 or younger since January 2007 against Manchester United, when David Edgar (19) was assisted by James Milner (20). Jacob Murphy has scored five Premier League goals this season, his most in a single campaign in the competition (overtakes 4 in 2022-23). His goal came just two minutes and 38 seconds after Lewis Miley’s equaliser for Newcastle.
