Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio combined for their first goal involvements as Aston Villa players to earn a 2-1 comeback win over Chelsea in the Premier League at Villa Park on Saturday.
Chelsea were quickest out of the blocks and deserved the early lead given to them by Enzo Fernández as they looked to put a recent poor run of form behind them.
But they failed to make the most of Villa’s cumbersome start and the hosts improved, eventually taking all three points thanks to two of their January signings.
Rashford supplied the assist for both goals, and each time Asensio applied the finish to put Chelsea to the sword – though there was more than a hint of fortune about the second.
Pedro Neto was arguably Chelsea’s standout player on the day and began as he meant to go on, taking on his man before playing a teasing ball across goal for a Fernández tap-in.
While the visitors registered more attempts in the first half, Villa steadily gained a foothold and looked a threat through Ollie Watkins, who went close to burying a fierce effort in the top-left corner.
The omens were good for Chelsea given Villa failed to win any of their previous six league games in which they’d trailed at half-time.
But Unai Emery introduced Rashford from the bench at the break and he made a difference.
The Manchester United loanee made a decisive impact when he met Matty Cash’s deep cross and turned the ball into the danger zone, where Asensio was waiting to bundle home.
Rashford then saw his 89th-minute cross volleyed goalwards by Asensio, whose effort squirmed through the clutches of Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
Villa’s comeback consigned the Blues to their fifth Premier League defeat in nine matches and moves the Villans up to seventh, a point behind their visitors.
