Carolina earned a 24-9 win at No. 17 Stanford Friday night in California in its ACC regular-season finale. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 5-1 in league competition and clinched a share of the ACC regular-season title for the first time since the 2018-19 season. UNC finished in a three-way tie in the conference standings with NC State and Virginia Tech, having beaten the Hokies and lost to the Wolfpack this season.
Lachlan McNeil, Sonny Santiago and Gavin Kane each picked up wins in their individual bouts against the Cardinal. Ethan Oakley, Joshua Ogunsanya and Nolan Neves scored upset wins as well, with Ogunsanya defeating fourth-ranked Lorenzo Norman of Stanford in comeback fashion in the 174-pound bout.
Carolina’s title is the 19th in program history and first under second-year head coach Rob Koll. Friday’s dual meet was a homecoming of sorts for Koll, who coached at Stanford for two seasons before coming to Chapel Hill.
Carolina has one more regular season meet left, as the Tar Heels will visit Oregon State on Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern time. The ACC Championships will be contested in Durham on March 9.
