After a disappointing season, the Indianapolis Colts are heading into free agency with a chance to strengthen their roster and make a push for the playoffs. With key areas needing upgrades, smart additions could make all the difference. Here are the top five free agents the Colts should target this offseason.
Top 5 Indianapolis Colts Free Agent Targets
Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen looks up at the scoreboard in the fourth quarter during a Week 14 NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.1. Zack Baun — LB, Philadelphia Eagles
Baun is a strong contender for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, making this move more of a long shot. However, few things would benefit a new defensive coordinator more than adding a playmaker of his caliber to the middle of the defense. Baun holds Pro Football Focus’ top pass coverage grade (91.5) among NFL linebackers, making him a perfect complement alongside Zaire Franklin. PFF has Baun projected to make $13-14 million AAV.
2. Carlton Davis III— CB, Detroit Lions
Jaylon Jones and Samuel Womack have been productive contributors, but the Colts still need more depth at the outside corner, especially with JuJu Brents struggling to stay healthy. While Davis has dealt with injuries, he wouldn’t be expected to play full-time in this role. Plus, with a Super Bowl ring, five straight playoff appearances, and a reputation as a leader, he brings valuable experience and a winning mentality to the team.
Detroit Lions wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El cheers on cornerback Carlton Davis III (23) during warm up before the Tennessee Titans game at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024.3. Mike Gesicki — TE, Cincinnati Bengals
After years of the by-committee and experimental approach at tight end, Indianapolis should pursue a legitimate starting option at the position this offseason. Mike Gesicki is 29 and coming off the best season of his career with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals last season, despite having to share targets with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
4. B.J. Hill — DT, Cincinnati Bengals
While there are few players with strong ties to Lou Anarumo in this year’s free-agent class, Hill stands out as the best fit. The reasoning is straightforward: DeForest Buckner (nearly 31), Grover Stewart (31), and Hill (30) are all top-tier defensive tackles, but their age is catching up with them. If the Colts want to maintain a steady presence in the middle of the defensive line that can stop the run and pressure the quarterback, rotating these three would be an ideal strategy.
5. Justin Fields — QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh has made it clear they don’t intend to bring both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson back next season. If Mike Tomlin elects to run things back with Wilson, Fields will likely hit free agency. With Fields still not considered a legitimate starting quarterback in the league, he’ll find his best fit somewhere where there is a returning starting quarterback whose margin for error in keeping that job is slim. Indianapolis seems like one of those places.
