California Legislator Wants Bigfoot To Be The Newest State Symbol ...Middle East

California has an official state amphibian (red-legged frog), crustacean (Dungeness crab), dinosaur (Augustynolophus morrisi) and fabric (denim, since gold rush prospectors launched Levi’s).

Now, a Northern California legislator wants to add a big, hairy, lovable icon to the roster: Bigfoot.

If Assemblymember Steve Rogers, D-Santa Rosa, has his way, Bigfoot will become the state cryptid, defined as a creature that may or may not exist because nobody is quite sure.

Rogers’ Assembly Bill 666 doesn’t say why Bigfoot belongs in the pantheon of honored California symbols. His office didn’t respond to a request for comment. All we have is the wording of the measure itself:

“Existing law establishes the state flag and the state’s emblems, including, among other things, the golden poppy as the official state flower and the California redwood as the official state tree. This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would designate Bigfoot as the official state cryptid.”

Alas, Bigfoot has not been spied in San Joaquin County, according to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, a website that purports to have a compilation of Bigfoot sightings across the state. That’s possibly because marshlands like those found around Stockton just aren’t Bigfoot’s thing. The creature is more of a forest dweller, preferring a locale where it’s easier to hide.

Bigfoot wouldn’t be a stranger in the Central Valley, though. The BFRO website shows Bigfoot stopped by Stanislaus County, albeit in 1962. Fresno County has had 19 sightings over the years, one as recently as a decade ago. Bigfoot has even toured Los Angeles and San Diego counties, though certainly not to take surfing lessons.

Some might say honoring Bigfoot sounds like another example of California wackiness. The Golden State, however, is hardly alone when it comes to outlandish state symbols. Louisiana has an official state meat pie. Maryland lists jousting as its official state sport. And New Mexico made headlines a couple of years ago for adopting roasting chiles as the official state aroma.

Bigfoot might approve of being named California’s official cryptid, but don’t expect the big lug to show up for the induction ceremony.
