THE Kansas City Chiefs are continuing their roster shakeup after losing the Super Bowl.

After getting demolished by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are working quickly on overhauling their roster.

That starts with cutting players to open up salary for re-signing players and acquiring free agents.

Among those being cut by the Chiefs are practice squad players Steven Nelson (cornerback) and Cole Christiansen (linebacker).

Both of the players’ contracts on the practice squad expired, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Nelson was drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Chiefs.

He spent the first four years of his career with the team.

After that, he bounced around the league between the Pittsburgh Steelers, Eagles, and Houston Texans.

Nelson retired from the NFL ahead of the 2024 season, but was later re-signed by the Chiefs and spent the year on their practice squad.

He did not appear in any games for the Chiefs this season.

Christiansen was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020.

He spent the first two years of his career in Los Angeles before being signed by the Chiefs in 2022.

Christiansen has played for the Chiefs ever since, going up and down between the active roster and the practice squad.

He appeared in nine games for the Chiefs this season.

The Chiefs are clearing out players and their contracts as they try to figure out how to proceed after their Super Bowl loss.

Kansas City could lose multiple key players to free agency this year and they don’t have the money to replace them.

As things currently stand, the Chiefs have about $3 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.

NFL important dates 2025 season

March 12 - Free Agency begins

April 24-26 – NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin

September 4 – 2025 season opener (TBC vs Eagles)

November 27 – Thanksgiving Day triple header

January 4, 2026 – End of regular-season

February 8, 2026 – Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California

That is not nearly enough to resign key free agents like Trey Smith or Justin Reid.

The biggest decision the Chiefs face this offseason is what to do with Travis Kelce.

He is owed a huge roster bonus on March 14, and the team could save a huge amount of money by cutting him.

Kelce is clearly showing signs of decline, and isn’t worth the large contract he is being payed anymore.

The Chiefs might try to coerce him into retirement if it can save them some money this offseason.
