NFL reporter suggests Jaguars' defense gets 'big overhaul' in free agency ...Middle East

Will we see the Jacksonville Jaguars take some big swings in free agency on the defensive side of the football?

According to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, he could see the Jaguars’ defense getting a “big overhaul” during the free agency period.

“In free agency, I’d definitely keep an eye on their defense,” said Wolfe about the Jaguars. “They hired new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and he wants to bring in his level of energy. He wants guys that play like he coaches, full of energy, full of playmaking ability, full of athleticism and I could see this unit getting a big overhaul.”

Decision on new Jaguars GM is expected this weekend as they finish 2nd interviews with finalists. Then, focus on work to improve the squad. Keep an eye on defense additions, in particular, in free agency under new DC Anthony Campanile.

Last season, the Jaguars’ defense ranked 27th in scoring. Both along the defensive front and in the secondary, improved play is a must.

As a unit, the Jaguars’ defense ranked 32nd in ESPN’s pass-rush win rate metric and they were near the bottom in pressure rate as well. Against the run, that unit ranked 27th in run-stop rate.

In the passing game, Jacksonville gave up way too many big plays, and ranked 24th in completion rate, and were in the bottom three of the NFL in interceptions, passer rating, and yards per pass attempt allowed.

Given the strength of this year’s draft class, where the defensive line group is absolutely loaded, the draft is where we could see Jacksonville attempt to revamp and add more talent to the defensive front.

So when it comes to free agency, perhaps the Jaguars’ plan is to heavily address the secondary in that portion of the offseason.

Another report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN suggests this as well, with Fowler mention the cornerback position specifically as one to watch in free agency for the Jaguars. ESPN’s Matt Bowen would then name the Jaguars a good team fit for cornerback Carlton Davis.

Another high-profile free agent to watch is safety Jevon Holland. Wolfe would also add that the Dolphins won’t be franchise tagging Holland and he mentioned the Jaguars as a potential fit.

With a wide-ranging coaching background, the Jaguars’ defense under Campanile is going to be malleable, meaning that they are quick to adjust and adapt to what the opponent is doing also built around the strengths of the players on the roster.

However, as Campanile discussed recently, more important than the scheme to him is the play-style.

“The most important thing when you talk about defense is your play-style,” said Campanile. “My vision for us defensively, we want to be a tough, fast, physical, violent at the point of attack team.
