The UC San Diego and San Diego State baseball teams both got their seasons underway on the road, and both suffered similar fates. Both the teams got off to a 1-2 start, and they now shift focus towards facing each other Tuesday in a Southern California rivalry.
The Tritons fell in a three-game series against Pacific, where they scored a total of 15 runs across the three games. 11 of those runs came in an explosive blowout win Saturday.
The Aztecs also played in a three-game series, but not against one team. SDSU traveled to Arizona to play three games as part of the MLB Desert Invitational. The Aztecs opened with a 16-11 win Friday over Seton Hall in Scottsdale, but they fell short on back-to-back days following, losing to Grand Canyon and Nebraska in Mesa.
Both teams saw incredible highs where they scored double-digit runs in the wins, and both teams suffered close defeats, along with a 13-0 loss from the Aztecs to Nebraska Sunday.
SDSU won both games between the two schools last year by a combined score of 21-10.
The Aztecs and Tritons won’t play a multiple-game series this regular season, but they do have two games at each home ballpark, with the second match taking place at SDSU at Tony Gwynn Stadium on April 15.
The first matchup on Tuesday will be the home-opener for the Tritons, and first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PST at Triton Ballpark and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
