4.0 magnitude earthquake shakes Delhi-NCR awake with strong tremors and rumbling noise

The epicenter was located near Dhaula Kuan at a shallow depth of five kilometers, which likely contributed to the intensity of the tremors experienced across various residential areas including Noida and Indirapuram. Although there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the event served as a stark reminder of Delhi's vulnerability to seismic activity.

Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan, an official told news agency PTI.

Residents reported feeling strong jolts, prompting many to rush out of their homes in panic. Tremors were also felt in other parts of North India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the situation, urging citizens to remain calm and stay vigilant. In a statement on X, PM Modi said that authorities were closely monitoring the situation and advised people to follow safety protocols in preparation for potential aftershocks.

Experts have noted that shallow earthquakes, originating just a few kilometres below the surface, tend to be more intense than deeper ones. While there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

Delhi is situated in Seismic Zone IV, an area characterized by moderate to high seismic risk due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates . This geological backdrop makes it susceptible not only to minor earthquakes but also raises concerns about potential major quakes in the future. Historical data indicates that the region has experienced earthquakes of similar magnitudes previously; for instance, a notable quake measuring 3.5 occurred in April 2020 followed by another measuring 4.4 in May of the same year .

In light of this recent earthquake event, authorities have urged residents to remain calm and vigilant regarding possible aftershocks . Prime Minister Modi emphasized public awareness while local agencies monitored conditions closely.
