The legendary actor-comedian — who famously joined Saturday Night Live as a cast member in its second season following the departure of Chevy Chase and remained on the show for three seasons from 1977 to 1980 — joined current Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che to look back at all of the talents who famously manned that desk over the decades.
After cheekily giving a cursory ranking of all of the Black-American men who have served as Weekend Update anchor — with only one entrant, Che, still the sole Black person to host in the show's five-decade history — Murray rated the segment's top 10 "regular" (i.e. white) anchors from worst to best. After hilariously getting Colin Jost's hopes up with a troll-ingly slow reveal of Colin Quinn at number 10, he ranked Seth Meyers, Dennis Miller and Kevin Nealon in the 7 through 9 slots. "I wish we had the time tonight to say something nice about any of them," Murray joked.
With Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd tied for third, and the late, great Norm Macdonald coming in second, that only left the reveal of Murray's personal pick for the greatest Weekend Update anchor ever. However, despite praising the number-one anchor's great smile and ability to bag the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, he revealed the spot was not occupied by Colin Jost but rather by Bill's older bro, Brian Doyle-Murray.
