Crashes, road closures as snow falls in high country Saturday ...Middle East

DENVER (KDVR) -- Saturday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day as a major snowstorm continues to impact travel in the mountains and snow is on the way in the Denver weather forecast.

Friday, wintry conditions caused multiple crashes, road closures and traffic backups on Interstate 70. The Colorado Department of Transportation warns drivers that the already busy Presidents Day weekend means the weather will have "major travel impacts" through Saturday.

A handful of roads have been closed and reopened due to crashes and vehicle recovery in the high country on Saturday.

Which roads are closed

As of noon, these closures are in place:

Colorado Highway 119: Closed in both directions due to safety concerns between 3rd Street in Nederland to 9th Street in Boulder U.S. Highway 6 (Loveland Pass): Closed in both directions due to safety concerns between mile point 222 and Interstate 70 Interstate 25 southbound: Lanes closed due to a crash at Owl Canyon Road north of Fort Collins Interstate 70 eastbound: Lanes closed due to safety concerns between Exit 180 East Vail and Exit 190 Vail Pass Summit

Friday night, an avalanche trapped a vehicle and covered the road on Loveland Pass. No one was injured, but the road remains closed on Saturday due to safety concerns. Notably, avalanche conditions are also highly dangerous this weekend.

The listed closures are based on CDOT's online tool COtrip, which drivers can use any time to check live road conditions and closures, track snowplows, see where chain laws are in effect and more.

Where crashes and delays are reported

I-70 delays possible

There were multiple crashes and slide-offs on I-70 between Silverthorne and Georgetown on Friday, causing intermittent closures. Colorado State Patrol said drivers should expect intermittent closures in that area of I-70 for the duration of the storm.

According to COtrip, crews are recovering a vehicle near mile point 164 on eastbound I-70. The left lane is closed, which may cause delays.

CDOT said traffic is being held at the Eisenhower Tunnel at the top of each hour to let hazmat vehicles through the tunnel, causing delays. Cameras show snowy roads in the area with eastbound traffic backed up for more than a mile, but traffic is getting by slowly.

State trooper hit on I-70

A Colorado State Patrol vehicle was struck from behind just after 9 a.m. while it was stopped blocking the left lane of eastbound Interstate 70 for another crash.

CSP said in a press release that the highway was closed and the crash was relocated off of the highway in New Castle. The road was reopened just after 10 a.m.

The trooper and driver of the other vehicle reported no injuries.

How do road conditions look?

Roads in many areas of the high country appear to be snow-packed and slick Saturday afternoon. Interstate 70 is both snowy and busy.

CSP warns drivers to slow down and leave extra space in between vehicles to maintain a safe following distance. The agency also recommends bracing for delays and making sure your vehicle is not only prepared to drive in wintry conditions but make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stuck.
