If Esperanza’s girls basketball team is healthy and shooting well, beware. The Aztecs can be tough to handle.

Coach Jimmy Valverde’s squad proved that again Thursday in the the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

Alexa Muller scored 22 points, including six 3-pointers, and freshman Kylie Chen had 15 points on five 3-pointers as Esperanza defeated host Westlake 56-53 in the first round.

Muller’s twin sister Charlotte added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Aztecs (19-10) advanced to the second round against visiting M.L. King on Saturday.

Esperanza, which placed third in the Crestview League, defeated King 55-47 in its season-opening game.

Westlake (23-7) was the No. 10 seed in Division 1 after finishing undefeated in Marmonte League. The Warriors were the highest seed in the division to fall in the first round.

Also in Division 1:

San Clemente 80, Valencia of Valencia 64: Guard Andrea Rico and forward Izzy Sims each scored 19 points as the host Tritons (24-5) won their 13th consecutive game. San Clemente plays host to JSerra in the second round Saturday.

Corona Centennial 66, Villa Park  43: Freshman Lauren Wolfe had10 points in the loss for the visiting Spartans (24-5), who held standout center Cydnee Bryant to 14 points.

In other girls basketball playoff games Thursday: 

In Division 2AA:

Beckman 52, Crossroads 41: Alexia Gallegos netted 13 points and Taylor Tam added 12 to pace the visiting Patriots (22-7), who play host to Palos Verdes in the second round Saturday.

San Juan Hills 67, San Dimas 50: Anna Shreeve scored a game-high 26 points and had 10 rebounds, and Adelyn Boberg added 20 points, as the host Stallions (18-11) advanced. San Juan Hills plays at Diamond Bar in the second round Saturday.

Portola 57, Camarillo  50: Madison Nguyen scored 23 points and Kara Niho added 15 points on five 3-pointers to lead the host Bulldogs (15-14), who play at Campbell Hall in the second round Saturday.

In Division 2A:

Marina 70, Valencia 51: Rylee Bradley tallied 24 points and Maria Tejeda added 19 points and six steals to lead the visiting Vikings (18-11). Marina plays at Pioneer in the second round Saturday.

Rosary 62, Pasadena 41: Kylie Yoon had 19 points and Riyanna Meaders chipped in 10 to pace the host Royals (15-12), who play at La Canada in the second round Saturday.

Sonora 59, Antelope Valley 47: Samantha Wilson scored 18 points and Liana Hwang added 16 points to lead the visiting Raiders (16-12), who play host to Torrance in the second round Saturday.

In Division 3AA:

Pacifica Christian 43, Troy 35:  Vivian Villagrana scored 17 points and Caylie Villagrans had 14 to lead the top-seeded Tritons (13-14), who play at Chaparral in the second round Saturday. The loss marked the final game for retiring Troy coach Roger Anderson.
