The Mater Dei boys basketball team trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter of its CIF-SS playoff game against Fountain Valley on Wednesday night, but the Monarchs took control after that.
They outscored the visiting Barons in each of the last three quarters for a 65-57 victory in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs .
Mater Dei took the lead at halftime, 33-28, by outscoring Fountain Valley 23-12 in the second quarter.
Blake Davidson led Mater Dei (21-8) with 19 points and Demarcus Henry added 17 points and nine rebounds. Luke Barnett had 13 points and Malloy Smith added 11.
Aaron DeSantiago of Fountain Valley (19-10) led all scorers with 27 points.
Mater Dei will be at St. Paul in the second round Friday night.

OPEN DIVISION
Notre Dame 71, JSerra 68: JSerra fell to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the first game of pool play in the Open Division. BJ Davis-Ray led JSerra (21-8) with 22 points and Brannon Martinsen added 16.
JSerra will play Trinity League foe Santa Margarita Friday on the road. The Lions lost to Santa Margarita twice this season.
DIVISION 1
Los Alamitos 83, Vista Murrieta 74: Los Alamitos had five players score in double-figures in a home playoff win over Vista Murrieta.
Samori Guyness led Los Alamitos (21-8) with 18 points and Trent Minter had 16. Liam Gray, Jordan Taylor and Wesley Trevino had 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Corona del Mar 70, Rancho Cucamonga 66: Maxwell Scott had 20 points for Corona del Mar (21-8) in a first-round win over Rancho Cucamonga.
Luke Mirhashemi had 14 points for the Sea Kings while Oliver Nakra and Jackson Harlan added 12. Ganon Overfelt had 10 points.
DIVISION 2AA
San Juan Hills 63, Santiago of Corona 42: Mason Hodges had 19 points for San Juan Hills in a home win over Santiago.
Adam Aziz had 11 points and Rocco Jensen added 10 for San Juan Hills (20-9).
Fairmont Prep 61, Oxnard 45: David Abisogun led Fairmont Prep with 16 points in its playoff win over Oxnard at Oxnard High.
Oliver Jones had 13 points for Fairmont Prep (18-9) and Leroy Davis added 12 points.
Newport Harbor 66, South Pasadena 64: Gavin Guy made the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lead Newport Harbor to a home win over South Pasadena.
Jack Berry scored 24 points for Newport Harbor (18-11) and Owen Saukkola added 22.
Pacifica Christian 62, Saugus 41: EJ Spillman had a complete game for the Tritons with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds in a rout of Saugus.
Hudson Reynolds had 17 points with four steals for Pacifica Christian (20-7) and Michael Noel added eight points.
DIVISION 2A
Villa Park 72, Holy Martyrs 54: Villa Park had four players score in double-figures in a first-round win.
Mal Johnson led the Spartans with 17 points and made four 3-pointers. Dakari Harris had 15 points while Tristan Griffin added 13. Diego Perez had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Villa Park (20-9).
Canyon of Canyon Country 58, El Dorado 49: El Dorado’s season came to an end Wednesday in a loss to Canyon of Canyon Country.
Noah Barker led El Dorado (21-9) with 18 points. Marcelo Gonzalez had 11 points and made three 3-pointers.
DIVISION 3AA
Tustin 71, Liberty 39: Elijah Morales had 16 points with 13 rebounds for Tustin in a dominant win over Liberty of Winchester.
Daniel Molina had 12 points for Tustin (23-6) and Brady Kong set the school-record for most charges taken in a season with 22.
Capistrano Valley Christian 52, Kennedy 38: Capistrano Valley Christian’s defense had eight steals in a win over Kennedy.
Benjamin Makelela scored 10 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had three steals for Capo Valley Christian (25-4). Michael Ahern had 14 points and Matthew Ahern added 11. Isaiah Dignadice had 12 points with six rebounds.
The Eagles have won 16 consecutive games and will play El Toro in the second round Friday.
El Toro 66, Cerritos 59: Sean Mendoza and Christien Jimenez each had 16 points for El Toro in a first round win over Cerritos.
Noah Cisneros added 13 points for the Chargers (16-13).
Beckman 69, Desert Christian Academy 37: Qusai Azem had 26 points with 11 rebounds for Beckman in a home win.
Sidd Raj had 14 points for Beckman (14-14) and Bronson Mejia added 11 points with eight rebounds.
DIVISION 4AA
Tarbur V’Torah 57, Western Christian 40: Ari Varon scored 22 points and made six 3-pointers for Tarbut V’Torah.
Jake Coblentz-Brown scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds for the Lions (16-3). Tarbut V’Torah will host Pacifica on Saturday.
Santiago 45, Los Amigos 42: Santiago got a bit of revenge against Coast League rival Los Amigos in the first round of the playoffs.
The Cavaliers lost to Los Amigos twice this season, both by double-digit margins.
Jorden De La Mora had 25 points for Santiago (18-11) and Jerell Guidry added 10 points with 12 rebounds.
DIVISION 4A
Laguna Hills 71, Redlands Adventist 47: Myles Mittelsteadt led Laguna Hills with 17 points in a dominant road win.
Anthony Kechejian made three 3-pointers and was crucial on the defensive end for Laguna Hills (12-16).
Katella 76, Excelsior Charter 65: Dillon Curtis had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in Katella’s win over Excelsior Charter.
Joseph Damian had 22 points and made 3-of-4 3-point attempts for Katella (15-9). Zadot Reyes scored 18 points and made 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
DIVISION 5AA
Anaheim 68, Desert Hot Springs 61: Anthony Spagnoletti had a team-high 15 points for Anaheim in a win over Desert Hot Springs.
Aydan Ibarra had 13 points for Anaheim (16-10) and Jason Garrett added 12. AJ Rodriguez and Isaiah Guerra each had 11 points.
DIVISION 5A
Bolsa Grande 80, Packinghouse Christian 33: Bolsa Grande forced 28 turnovers in a rout of Packinghouse Christian.
Braden Maae led Bolsa Grande (8-18) with 20 points and freshman Locston Hong added 10.
Saddleback 78, Legacy Prep 35: Christopher Trotter led Saddleback with 24 points in a win over Legacy Prep.
Angel Soberinas added 21 points for Saddleback (12-13). It was the first playoff game for Saddleback in over 10 years.
