Things might not get much worse than the Bulls’ 40-point home loss to a team that’s two games over .500 – I’ll start by saying that. But, if I were a 76ers fan right now, I might be every bit as fed up and angry with my team.
The Bulls are at least (kind of) embracing the tank life after the trade deadline. It’s going to get really bad, and they should have moved on from more than just Zach LaVine, but at least they’re taking some baby steps.
The Sixers, on the other hand, have a pair of superstars – one of which is a lead guard in his early 20s and another is a former MVP – and had basically the most cap space in the NBA this offseason. Surely, that’s a recipe for success, right? Wrong.
Philly used their cap space to sign 34-year-old Paul George, who’s had a decent amount of injuries in his career. His season has been meh at best, and he’s spent a lot of time on the shelf. Joel Embiid also barely plays, and the effort you get from him when he does is a bit of a coin flip. Tyrese Maxey is still awesome, but he can only do so much on his own. This all-in effort from the Sixers’ front office has led them to … 11th in the Eastern Conference and 1.5 games behind the Bulls. Not great!
Tuesday’s game against the Raptors was only the 13th time this season all three of those players started together, and just the 10th game they’ve finished together. Last night they welcomed a Toronto squad to Philly which sits near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. One would think that is a nice get-right spot for the Sixers “Big Three.”
As the great Lee Corso says, not so fast my friend!
After Philly struggled all night, they still found themselves with the ball down 105-103 with 11 seconds left. Joel Embiid got the ball WIDE OPEN at the top of the key. We’re talking no one within 10-15 feet of him! Instead of putting up a go-ahead three-point attempt, Embiid drove the ball into traffic, lost it on the dribble, and committed a game-losing turnover.

So, as I mentioned above, the Sixers might not be in a worse spot than the Bulls long-term, but they’re at least giving them a run for their money. The difference is that Philly has a guy in Daryl Morey running the show, who has experience building winning basketball teams. While this one most certainly isn’t a winning example, Morey has shown in the past he has no issues pulling every lever possible to try and fix his team’s issues. However, there’s no sugar-coating it, the Sixers are in a dumpster-fire situation this season.
Arturas Karnisovas and the Bulls front office prefer the method of doing the minimum when it comes to changing their roster and hoping things drastically change. Maybe moving Zach LaVine was a sign that meaningful moves could be coming, but the Bulls’ front office sitting on their hands the rest of the time leading up to the trade deadline raises the concern level right back up!
If one thing is for sure, the Bulls would love it if the 76ers could finally string together some victories. Swapping places with them on the Eastern Conference totem pole would give Chicago’s lottery odds another nice bump, which we talked more about earlier this week. Don’t get me wrong, there is some comfort in knowing the Bulls aren’t the only organization down bad … but it’s still in their best interest if Philly can figure some things out fast!
