Mr. Phillip B. Hudson Sr.

Longtime South Carthage businessman, Mr. Phillip B. Hudson Sr., age 81 of Gordonsville, was discovered unresponsive Sunday morning February 9, 2025 at his Gordonsville Highway home. He was pronounced deceased at the Highpoint Health – Riverview Emergency Room at 11:20 a.m. later that morning.

Memorial services will be conducted on Thursday afternoon February 13th from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with former Carthage United Methodist Church pastor, Dr. Jim Clardy celebrating his long and storied life. A Spring graveside service for he and his wife Gayle, will be conducted at the Lutts Cemetery in the Lutts Community in Gayle’s family’s plot.

The Hudson family will receive friends only on Thursday February 13th at Sanderson in Carthage from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. Celebration of Phillip’s Life.

Mr. Hudson was born Phillip Barrett Hudson in Cookeville on August 22, 1943 and was one of two children, a daughter and a son of the late Carl Barrett Hudson who died January 18, 1983 at the age of 78 and Vida Belle Stout Hudson who died April 26, 1992 at the age of 83.

Mr. Hudson’s only sibling, Patsy Belle Hudson Albritton preceded him in death at the age of 70 on April 25, 2018.

He was a 1962 graduate of the Cookeville Central High School.

At the Carthage United Methodist Church on May 3, 1969, he was united in marriage to Lutts, Tennessee native, the former Wanda Gayle Lutts, a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin and who was a former home demonstration agent in Smith County until 1971. The ceremony was performed by then church pastor, Rev. Maurice Moore.

Mrs. Gayle died January 29th just eleven days before Phillip Sr. The closeness of those two could make one understand why he did not want to go on in life without her by his side, as his loving and devoted companion in life.

The Hudson’s were members of the Carthage United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hudson was a second-generation owner of Cumberland Supply Company in South Carthage until his retirement in 2020.

The building supply firm was founded by J. E. Allen and Carl B. Hudson in 1946 who came to South Carthage from Cookeville to establish the Cumberland Supply Co. in 1946. After J. E. Allen’s death, Phillip Sr’s father, Carl Barrett Hudson, continued the tradition of the very successful business.

After his retirement Phillip Sr’s two sons, Carl and Phillip Jr., assumed the helm of the business until Phillip Jr. acquired a 100% interest in Cumberland Supply Co. Inc.

Phillip Sr. served on the Citizens Bank Board of Directors for thirty-four years before his retirement in 2021.

Phillip Sr. and Gayle enjoyed traveling, attending sporting events and car races and together accomplished what few do, by vacationing on all seven continents.

Boating on Center Hill Lake and traveling the Tennessee River in their own boat was their favorite past time. They also used to love to ride Harley’s, and traveled the country doing so.

Surviving are his two sons, Carl Lutts Hudson and wife Cheryl of Lebanon, Phillip Barrett Hudson Jr. and wife Dr. Alissa Craft Hudson of Cookeville; five grandchildren, Cecelia Craft Hudson, Phillip Barrett Hudson III and Darby Anne Hudson; Carl’s two children, Benjamin Carl Hudson and Samuel Elliott Hudson.

The Hudson family has requested memorials to the Carthage United Methodist Church.
