Draft analyst Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus put together his first post-Super Bowl 2025 NFL mock draft and had the Jacksonville Jaguars trading down.
Instead of picking at fifth overall, the Jaguars moved down to pick No. 11 to select Michigan cornerback Will Johnson.
In a swap with the San Francisco 49ers–who would take defensive tackle Mason Graham–Sikkema had the Jaguars receiving pick No. 11 and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The 49ers would get the fifth overall pick.
It was reported by Adam Schefter on Sunday that the 49ers granted Samuel and his representatives permission to find a trade partner. Samuel has done a bit of everything in the 49ers’ offense and is particularly good after the catch. He would bring an added versatile presence to Liam Coen’s scheme.
The Jaguars’ selection of Johnson has been a popular one for them, although many have Jacksonville doing that at pick No. 5. However, some of the best in the business when it comes to the draft, Dane Brugler and Daniel Jeremiah, both have made note that taking Johnson at pick No. 5 may not bring the best value.
So in this trade, the Jaguars get added help at receiver and still get much-needed help at cornerback.
A turf toe injury would limit Johnson to just six games in 2024, but overall in his college career, he allowed a completion rate of 53% at 13.4 yards per catch with nine interceptions and seven pass breakups.
“With Samuel in hand, Jacksonville drafts outside cornerback Will Johnson, who was a top cover player in college football when healthy in 2023,” wrote Sikkema. “Johnson, Tyson Campbell and Jarrian Jones would be quite the cornerback trio.”
Too often last season, the Jaguars’ secondary was picked on by opposing quarterbacks. Jacksonville ranked in the bottom three of the NFL in interceptions, passer rating, and yards per pass attempt. They were also 24th in completion rate as well.
