A free, on-demand shuttle program is now offering rides in North Park and City Heights.
North Park Main Street and the City Heights Community Development Corporation this week saw the soft launch of Mid-City GO, an electric ride share service that utilizes zero-emission vehicles to help reduce the number of solo drivers on the road and ease congestion.
Projected to provide 75,000 annual rides and slice 450,000 miles traveled by single-occupancy vehicles, the program not only centers around environmental impact, but also efficiency.
During the four-year pilot program, TransitTech provider Via will operate the service, which the public can access by a downloadable app. Main Street and the CDC will provide feedback over time to enhance the shuttle program.
Although they are only about two miles apart, two major freeways split up City Heights and North Park. Mid-City GO will attempt to bridge the “last-mile gaps between public transit and destinations.” The service will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Main Street and the CDC will host a celebration of the new program at 9 a.m. Friday at the Wabash Open Space, 3396 University Ave. San Diego City council members Sean Elo-Rivera and Stephen Whitburn are expected to attend, along with California Air Resources Board Member Diane Takvorian.
Mid-City GO is a Clean Mobility Options project funded by California Climate Investments and the California Energy Commission.
