Chicago Bears 2024 Exit Interviews: Tremaine Edmunds ...Middle East

The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of Tremaine Edmunds.

Tremaine Edmunds’ 2024 Snapshot

There were many things to be frustrated with during the 2024 season, and Tremaine Edmunds was often on my list. Edmunds finished the season with 110 tackles and became the youngest player in league history to log 100 games, but his season as a whole felt very underwhelming.

Edmunds graded out as one of the worst linebackers in the league at Pro Football Focus with a 59.3 overall grade, which ranks 119th out of 189 linebackers despite playing the 12th most snaps of any linebacker. His coverage grade was 56.3, and his pass rush grade was even worse at 52.9. Edmunds totaled one sack, one hurry, and four pressures on opposing quarterbacks in 2024. The linebacker allowed a 76.1 percent catch rate and 10.6 yards per reception in coverage. Opposing quarterbacks posted a 92.9 passer rating when targeting him in coverage.

My biggest frustration with Edmunds was that it seemed like he missed a tackle or two every week, and it always felt incredibly ill-timed. In reality, Tremaine Edmunds missed a tackle in 10 of 17 games this season and two in Week 10 against New England.

By the Numbers

Contract Status

Edmunds is entering the third year of his four-year, $72 million deal with the Bears, which he signed ahead of the 2023 season. He is scheduled to make $14.9 million in base salary and $2.53 million in signing and workout bonuses, bringing his 2025 cap number to $17.43 million.

Turning the Page

Much of the negative sentiment surrounding Tremaine Edmunds is tied to his performance relative to his $72 million contract. Specifically, GM Ryan Poles gave him that money to replace Roquan Smith, whom he chased out of town in his first considerable contract negotiation as the Bears’ GM. After Poles traded Smith to Baltimore, he signed a five-year, $100 million deal with Baltimore and has flourished and established himself as one of the best linebackers in football.

Is that fair to Edmunds? Probably not, but it’s the reality. Regardless, Edmunds isn’t going anywhere. The Bears would eat $13.07 million in dead cap and gain a savings of $4.36 million if they cut him this offseason, and no one is going to trade for Edmunds and his $17.43 million cap hit at this point.

The good news is that Edmunds has played better in his career than in 2024. He’ll have a new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and will pretty much be playing for the remainder of his contract in 2025. If Edmunds doesn’t impress his new coaching staff in 2025, Chicago can save $15 million in cap space by moving on from him after next season, which will almost be a certainty unless Edmunds earns every dollar in 2024. I love a good prove-it year.
