The Chicago Cubs, ostensibly still in the market for a free-agent third baseman, just saw one option fall off the board. Former White Sox third baseman – and offseason Cubs target – Yoan Moncada is signing a modest deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

Because of that youth and remaining upside (but expectedly low cost), he was an oft-discussed Cubs free-agent target behind the scenes this winter. I guess he got sick of waiting for the Cubs to decide if they’re going to get serious or go in a different direction.
Orrrrrrr … it’s possible Yoan Moncada is making his decision today precisely because we’re about to hear of some movement on the Alex Bregman front. There was some smoke online last night that a Bregman deal (with whomever he chooses) could be nearing a conclusion. And the Super Bowl coincides with Pitchers and Catchers beginning to report this weekend. So this week/Friday is something of a natural end date for a decision.
Or I’m just connecting dots that aren’t there because I’m getting tired of following the Alex Bregman saga. You be the judge.
As for Moncada, he was wise to go after a one-year deal. Five million isn’t a lot (I mean, relatively speaking …), but with a good season, he can hit free agency in a much better spot next winter, still fairly young, too. With Anthony Rendon’s perpetual absences (no more than 58 games in a season since 2019(!), Moncada should get plenty of opportunities to showcase himself for a better deal next winter.
