Sitting 41-10 and at the top of the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers are going for it.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Cavaliers have acquired De’Andre Hunter from the Atlanta Hawks. The deal will see Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, three second-round picks, and two swaps. Hunter is in the thick of a career year, averaging 19.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game off the bench.

For a franchise that is hoping to make a deep playoff run, the trade makes a lot of sense. While Hunter has faced his fair share of injury trouble over his six-year career, he has been a very steady 3-and-D presence when available. Hunter has shot 38.8 percent from downtown over the past two seasons on 5.9 attempts per game. The 27-year-old has also shown an improved confidence to attack off the dribble and force his way to the charity stripe.
The Cavaliers have already been the NBA’s top offense this season, but they have now added even more scoring versatility. Hunter will provide a more reliable stroke from downtown than LeVert, as well as give the Cavs someone who can help anchor the second unit. Likewise, the franchise will have plenty of control moving forward, as Hunter is under contract through 2027 on a deal that nets him roughly $22.5 million per season.
As for the Hawks, while this doesn’t signify a full-blown rebuild, it does show that they are looking to reinvent themselves. They still have zero incentive to miss the playoffs, as their own first-round pick belongs to the San Antonio Spurs. We’ll have to see if they have any more moves up their sleeve. Both Clint Capela and Bojan Bogdanovic have been other names to enter the rumor mill this season.
