Macy’s employee reveals truth behind store’s ‘delayed’ plans after chain confirms popular location no longer closing ...Middle East

AMID mass shutdowns as part of Macy’s Bold New Chapter, a popular location has seemingly confirmed it won’t be on the chopping block.

By the end of the initiative in 2026, at least 150 of the retailer’s department stores will close their doors for good.

Macy’s confirmed last month that the Bold New Chapter will close 66 stores in 2025.

This was updated twice over the past year, initially starting at a tentative 50, then 55, then 65 during a recent third-quarter earnings call before being verified at 66.

The company seeks to modernize and move to smaller-format locations while shedding the weight of larger, underperforming stores.

For a short while, it was believed by local shoppers near the Macy’s at Northlake Mall on Atlanta’s northeast side that it would be included in the list of 66.

FUTURE UNCLEAR

That has now changed, according to a document from the Northlake Mall location posted in a Facebook thread this month.

The Macy’s store said it would conduct a “Customer Community Appreciation” event on February 8, as consistent support from consumers in the area saved it from being axed.

“You’re invited to Macy’s Northlake Customer-Community Appreciation Celebration!” the form read.

“We’re here to stay, and it’s all thanks to YOU, our incredible community!”

Customers will be offered food and drinks, a performance from a live DJ, a Kid’s Zone, and even giveaways.

“This is our way of saying THANK YOU for your support,” the Northlake Mall Macy’s added.

While the note from the location was a relief for some shoppers, an employee at the location could still be removed the following year.

“The closing is only delayed until Jan 2026,” they wrote in the thread.

“We have a one year repeiv.”

The U.S. Sun has contacted the Northlake Mall Macy’s for more information.

RE-IMAGINING BEGINS

Macy’s CEO Tony Spring has assured customers and investors that the shutdowns have been and continue to be necessary, not only because they were “less productive,” but also because it brings in around $600 to $700 million for the company to use in its Bold New Chapter.

“At the start of the closure strategy [we] said we had locations that were less profitable and less productive, and we wanted to monetize them as soon as possible,” Spring said on an earnings call.

“So the fact that we are closing more stores this year is a reflection that our assets have value and that even in this less stable market, we are transacting.”

At least 350 of the department store chain’s locations that aren’t closing will get refurbished and updated.

There will also be brand-new openings thanks to the millions from the closures of 30 new smaller-format Macy’s, about 15 new Bloomingdales, and 30 Bluemercury stores.

While speaking at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show in New York City recently, Spring said that Macy’s shopping experience “can and should be better” and that the Bold New Chapter will provide a great “opportunity to reimagine the Macy’s Inc. portfolio.”

Macy’s sales suffered a 2.4% decrease year over year to about $4.7 billion int he most recent fiscal quarter.

It’s also not alone in mass closure plans.

Big Lots continues to shutter stores nationwide after its bankruptcy woes, with over 700 to shut down soon.

Kohl’s also revealed plans recently to close 27 stores.
