The Pete Alonso free agency closes up back where it started, and where most thought it would end: he’s going back to the New York Mets.

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) February 6, 2025Hey, maybe Alonso – 30 and with some signs of decline – will put together a monster 2025 season, will opt out, and uncoupled from draft pick compensation will get a big contract. But as it stands right now, it looks like it was a huge mistake turning down any big extension offers the Mets might’ve made him in the past.
The market just never developed for Alonso, a bat-only guy whose bat hasn’t looked as shiny the last two seasons. He is still a very good offensive player and a threat to hit 40 homers, but that doesn’t always get you paid big in free agency, especially with the Qualifying Offer attached. So Alonso returns to the Mets, the only team that doesn’t have to give up pick(s) to sign him.
