The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of Josh Blackwell.
Josh Blackwell’s 2024 Snapshot
Josh Blackwell’s 2024 season will best be remembered for his punt return touchdown in Week 18’s victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, and it was a heck of a highlight in a much-needed win for the Bears in the regular season finale.
Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower had wide receiver DJ Moore back for the punt return, but Josh Blackwell caught the kick on the opposite side of the field and took it 94 yards for six points. Hightower’s trickery and Blackwell’s return gave Chicago a touchdown lead in the opening quarter, a place where they didn’t do much scoring in 2024.

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) January 5, 2025Josh Blackwell also logged his first career interception picking off Trevor Lawrence in Chicago’s beatdown of the Jacksonville Jaguars in London before the bye week (and the death spiral). Josh Blackwell’s limited secondary role was a mixed bag. In his largest sample size against the Commanders in Week 8, he was bullied by Jayden Daniels and pretty much everyone in a Washington uniform. Outside of that, he was solid, allowing a 62.5 percent catch rate and 41.7 passer rating against in coverage in limited work.
On special teams, Blackwell returned seven punts for 146 yards and a score (with 94 of those yards coming via his Week 18 touchdown against Green Bay) and one kick for 25 yards. In coverage, he was a solid contributor on special teams. All in all, Blackwell is a fine special teamer who can step up and play a limited role in the secondary when called upon.

Blackwell will become a restricted free agent in March when the new league year begins. Blackwell made $985K with Chicago in 2024, and they will have the opportunity to match any offer sheet that Blackwell signs with another team in free agency unless they sign him to a new contract first and avoid free agency altogether.

As I said, Blackwell’s season was fine, and he’s a solid special teamer who can play a limited role in the secondary in a pinch. He’s young and affordable, making him a solid candidate to return to Chicago in a similar role next season.
