KINGSTON, Ontario (WWNY) – With the threat of a trade war on the horizon, America’s relationship with Canada has been strained.
7 News visited Kingston, Ontario, to hear what people there have to say.
“I’m sure a lot of people are scratching their heads asking what the ultimate goal is. Seems like he wants to single-handedly implode the economy of both U.S. and Canada,” said Nigel Murray of Kingston.
For months, President Trump has threatened to implement a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, a move that would spark a trade war with economic consequences on both sides of the border. Although he put those threats on hold Monday following an agreement with the prime minister, that treatment has left Canadians feeling burnt.
“It has felt a lot to Canadians like bullying to a certain extent. That word has been used certainly by the prime minister. This is an attempt to bully Canadians,” said Daniel Beals, vice president of marketing for St. Lawrence Cruise Lines.
Canadian sports fans at a Hockey game in Ottawa made their opinion known when they booed the American anthem.
At Kingston’s city hall, Mayor Bryan Paterson says he’s sad to see how the countries’ relationship has been damaged.
“I think that the larger issue is just how Canadians feel betrayed, how we feel that trust and relationship we built over the years has been cast aside at the political level. I think you’re seeing Canadians working through that,” he said.
Paterson, who is also an economics professor, says he’s glad to see the tariffs have been put on pause, but a possible trade war has him on edge.
“Nobody wins a trade war. Tariffs are terrible for everyone. They put jobs at risk. They lead to higher prices,” he said.
Tensions aside, Patterson wants people in the North Country to know they’re still warmly welcomed in the city.
“As Canadians, I think we clearly differentiate between the political leadership in the United States and average Americans that we’ve always seen as friends and neighbors,” he said.
Although a trade war has been averted for the time being, the threat of tariffs still looms. President Trump put them on pause for 30 days. After that, he may still implement them.
