Troy Selwood, a former Brisbane AFL player, has died at age 40

Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL), has sent shockwaves through the sporting community. At just 40 years of age, Selwood's death is particularly poignant given his contributions to Australian football and his significant role within the Selwood family, known for producing several prominent AFL players. Over his career from 2005 to 2010, he played 75 games for the Lions and later achieved success as a captain of Geelong's VFL team, leading them to a premiership in 2012 .

The brother of Geelong great Joel and former West Coast and Cats midfielder Scott, and twin brother of Eagles premiership player Adam, was remembered for his “bravery, his humour, his deep thinking, his love and compassion”.

The football industry was rocked earlier on Tuesday after Dale Tapping, Essendon’s VFL coach and a former assistant at Brisbane and Collingwood, died from cancer aged 59.

Selwood played 75 matches for the Lions between 2005 and 2010 after joining the club when selected with pick No 19 in the 2002 draft.

Andrew Dillon spoke on behalf of the league in a statement, passing on his thoughts to "the entire Selwood family and the wider football industry".

"Troy was an incredible advocate for AFL Talent Pathways programs both in his role as a Club recruiter and more recently during his time at Geelong Grammar," Dillon said.

"He demonstrated a core purpose to always place the needs of young players first and created environments where they could be themselves.

Selwood became Head of Football and Sports Performance Mentor Geelong Grammar.

“Troy achieved many great things in his life. From his time as a young man and student, to his journey as an AFL player, to working in recruiting young players to help live their AFL dreams to his latest passion and adventure at Geelong Grammar School, Troy was able to influence and touch the lives of so many people,” the Selwood family statement read.

“We know many people will reach out and share their stories of Troy, and we thank you for your love and support.

The emotional response from Selwood's family underscores the profound loss they have experienced. In their statement following his death, they expressed their heartbreak while highlighting Troy’s generosity of spirit and compassion. As both an athlete and a mentor, Selwood's legacy will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of those who knew him personally as well as within the broader sporting community that admired his contributions to the game.
