To dig more into the details of the Play USA study on the luckiest and unluckiest lottery numbers, The U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with Alexander Korsager, chief gambling officer at casino.org.
Alexander KorsagerThe U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with Alexander Korsager, chief gambling officer at Casino.org[/caption]He first delved into the top five unluckiest numbers, which were all in their forties.
Although the study reveals the actual frequency of these numbers being winners, player behavior and perceptions may also play a role in what are considered “unlucky” numbers.
“Most people choose significant dates for their lottery numbers, like birthdays. These only go as high as 12 for the month and 31 for the day. Leaving a significant gap in the 40s,” began Korsager.
“People also like to spread their bets, so you’ll see a concentration of numbers in the lower range and a high one thrown in last minute as an afterthought. Psychologically, there is an aspect of ‘safety’ within the middle-ground, and so that’s where most people will choose their numbers.”
NUMBERS GAME
The lottery expert also cautioned players against relying too heavily on previous winning numbers to pick their own numbers.
Although analyzing historical data of lottery numbers can reveal interesting trends, it’s important to remember that lottery drawings are completely random.
“Each number has the same probability of being drawn in every individual draw, and the reoccurrence of ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ numbers carries no weight in future outcomes,” emphasized Korsager.
“The belief that the past draw influences the future is commonly referred to as the ‘gambler’s fallacy’ and can become a dangerous mindset and a breeding ground for compulsive gambling.
“It’s essential to view the lottery as nothing but fun and not get too caught up in the selection of numbers or any belief that you can improve your odds.”

Alexander KorsagerChief Gambling Officer at Casino.org.He did, however, share the one key way to boost your chances of scoring a lottery win.
“There is only one real way to improve your chances of winning the lottery: to join a lottery pool,” said the lottery expert.
“If you buy two tickets, you have double the chance. If you buy 100 tickets, you have 100 times the chance. Buying more tickets is the only thing that will genuinely increase your odds, even if it’s marginal.
“Joining a pool allows you to purchase significantly more tickets while keeping costs low. But remember that if you do land a prize, you will need to split it, meaning a smaller payout.”
The U.S. Sun has previously spoken with other lottery experts.
One expert revealed the list of reasons winners take so long to claim their prizes – and top tips to “guarantee wealth.”
Another revealed an exact trick to “increase your chances” of scoring million-dollar jackpots and a way to “game” the system.
