This has been a whirlwind of an offseason for the Mercury so far, as general manager Nick U’Ren’s front office has assembled a starry trio to build around.

Sabally joins forces with 2024 All-WNBA wing Kahleah Copper and three-time All-WNBA forward Alyssa Thomas. The Mercury reportedly traded point guard Natasha Cloud, forward Rebecca Allen and the No. 12 overall pick to the Connecticut Sun for Thomas earlier this week.

Diana Taurasi has yet to announce her plans to either keep playing or retire, while Brittney Griner agreed to sign with the Atlanta Dream after 11 seasons playing for the Mercury.

Satou Sabally joins Mercury

Sabally is 26-year-old, 6-foot-4 forward whom Dallas selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. She played college ball at Oregon after growing up in Germany.

The southpaw shooter made the All-Star team in her second pro season, but her breakout came in 2023.

That year, Sabally averaged a career-best 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. She finished fifth in the MVP voting, won Most Improved Player and earned All-Star and All-WNBA nods.

Sabally missed the first 25 games of last season after suffering a shoulder injury while playing for Team Germany in Olympic qualifiers. She played for Germany at the Paris Olympics and returned for Dallas’ final 15 games. She averaged 17.9 points and 6.4 boards for a Wings team that finished 9-31.

Over the past two years, Sabally has shot 39% from beyond the arc and 43.2% from the field, giving the Mercury a stretch 4 or 5 option.

She is now playing in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league, playing on the Phantom with her Oregon teammate Sabrina Ionescu, along with Griner and Cloud.

Brown has played five WNBA seasons since going No. 7 overall out of Baylor in 2019. The 6-foot-7 big played 39 games for Dallas last season and averaged 5.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game with a shooting percentage of 58.2%.

Uzun put up 4.4 points and 3.0 assists per contest in 40 games last season for the Wings, her first year in the WNBA.

Sophie Cunningham leaves Mercury

Cunningham will join Caitlin Clark with the Fever after she spent the past six seasons in Phoenix, developing into a key rotation player and starter. Over the last three years, Cunningham scored 10.5 points per game on 37.2% outside shooting.

She is ninth in team history in minutes played, fourth in 3-pointers and ninth in points scored.

The 28-year-old remained engaged with Valley basketball fans during the offseason by analyzing Phoenix Suns games on TV.
