“Opportunistic” Cubs Still Hanging Around in a Handful of Pursuits, Including Alex Bregman ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

A bit to share this evening from the rumor mill, with the Chicago Cubs still hanging around in a few markets, eyeing another chance to pounce. Given how things have moved today, that chance might be coming sooner rather than later.

Among the names that keeps popping up? Third baseman Alex Bregman.

From The Athletic:

“‘Opportunistic’ is the buzzword around the Cubs as the organization tries to be nimble in case a larger deal at the right price presents itself while continuing to add role players for the bench and the bullpen. Alex Bregman remains a free agent, and both Chicago and Houston have expressed interest in the All-Star third baseman, according to sources briefed on those discussions.”

Opportunistic feels like the right word in this situation, as the Cubs would be crazy not to pounce on killer deal for Bregman, given the push in 2025 and the spot there at third base (Matt Shaw can work in at multiple spots until a permanent home opens up). But it can’t be an expected move, since we don’t think Bregman’s market is going to collapse to such a level that he’s a steal (and the Cubs, and only the Cubs, want to make a deal for a steal!). So: opportunistic. If something crazy presents itself, cool, good, do it. Probably won’t happen.

Bruce Levine also wrote about the Cubs and Bregman, though, together with a number of other rumored pursuits:

From the piece:

“The highest-profile name on the Cubs’ radar remains free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. The Cubs are hanging around in the Bregman derby, looming as a possible landing spot if he shifts his focus to a shorter-term deal. Bregman has five-year contract offers on the table, according to sources, but the Cubs have been cautious about offering long-term deals. Many MLB teams are mapping out their economic plans as a work stoppage may loom in MLB ahead of the 2027 season.

The 30-year-old Bregman’s landing spot might end up being back in Houston, where he has played his first nine MLB seasons. It’s unclear if the Astros’ original six-year, $156-million offer to Bregman remains on the table, but they trimmed some payroll by trading Pressly to the Cubs.”

Levine goes on to suggest that a Cody-Bellinger-opt-out-style deal would be the Cubs’ angle, and although I agree that such a structure is faaaaaar more plausible than the Cubs offering Bregman a straight five or six-year deal, I have written before that I just don’t see the Bregman/Bellinger situations as particularly comparable for these Cubs.

For what it’s worth, Jon Heyman today listed the Astros and Cubs as perhaps the two most likely teams for Bregman, so I guess I have to at least keep this on the radar (and it’d be fun for me to be wrong):

Of course, it’s notable that the Houston Astros remain to most prognosticators the most likely spot for Bregman, and the Cubs could simply be making for convenient public leverage.
