Marcedes Lewis’ 2024 Snapshot
We started the day with Gerald Everett’s 2024 season review, so we might as well stick with the theme of poorly performing tight ends and get Marcedes Lewis’ review out of the way.
There’s not much to say about Lewis, who had a whopping one catch on his only target of the season. That catch gained two yards. Since Lewis was paid $2 million this season, that was a $2 million catch for the 40-year-old tight end. Lewis had four times as many penalties as catches in 2024, with Lewis being flagged for three false starts and one offensive holding penalty. He netted 25 yards in penalties, and when we factor in his two receiving yards, he produced negative 23 yards for Chicago this season.
But hey, he’s a leader of men, am I right?
Despite the sarcasm in that statement, Lewis contributed as a leader this season when he became vocal with former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron about his need to coach the offensive players harder and hold them more accountable. His words resulted in a dead cat bounce, in which Waldron’s offense looked semi-competent for a few weeks before the Fail Mary blew everything up, and the wheels came off the bus.

Lewis signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Bears ahead of the 2024 season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins in March.

Like Gerald Everett, there is no legitimate reason for the Bears to bring Marcedes Lewis back next season. If they want his leadership presence, hire him in a coaching capacity. There is no need for Lewis, whose only value is in his leadership, to occupy a roster spot and be active on Sundays.
