Chicago Bears 2024 Exit Interviews: DJ Moore ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of wide receiver DJ Moore.

DJ Moore’s 2024 Snapshot

DJ Moore became the team’s highest-paid player on the heels of a 1,364-yard campaign in his debut season with the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, his second season in Chicago was a bit more challenging than his first.

One of the most discussed topics of the 2024 season was DJ Moore’s visible frustration on the field as he worked to get on the same page with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams this season. Moore and Williams admitted that at various points last season, they weren’t where they would like to be as a quarterback and receiver combo. They found a better balance as the season progressed, but Moore’s role in the offense had become strictly a short-yardage option by then.

DJ Moore’s 2024 campaign was nothing to scoff at, with the veteran wide receiver racking up 98 receptions, 966 yards, and six touchdowns. Still, there was plenty of meat left on the bone early in the season when Moore’s route usage was deeper, and he and Williams failed to connect consistently last season.

Moore’s 140 targets ranked 11th in the league, his 636 routes ranked 5th, and his 100 percent route participation was No. 1. However, Moore’s average depth of target (ADOT) was just 7.5 yards, which ranked No. 94 in the league. By comparison, Moore’s ADOT in 2023 was 10.9, which ranked 51st.

In 2023, Moore was used significantly more in the deep passing game, logging 30 deep targets (1.8 per game), the fifth most in the NFL. This season, Moore logged 20 deep targets (1.2 per game), which ranked 20th in the league.

Contract Status

Moore signed a four-year, $110 million extension with the Bears ahead of the 2024 season. Moore’s extension money kicks in this season and will pay him $20.65 million in base salary with $4.25 million in signing and workout bonuses scheduled. Moore’s $24.85 million cap number will account for 9 percent of the Bears cap.

Turning the Page

DJ Moore remains the best wide receiver on the Chicago Bears roster and one of the best weapons in the league. As frustrating as 2024 was for Moore and his rookie quarterback, I’m optimistic that Ben Johnson’s offense and another offseason of work between Moore and Williams will help DJ find the downfield magic he possessed in 2023 when he earned his mega extension.

If Johnson can stretch Moore’s ADOT and deep targets, and Williams and Moore can polish their rapport, we could be in for an exciting season in which Moore will return to the upper echelon of pass catchers in this league.
