The Trenton Golden Hawks returned to top spot on the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s weekly Top 20 rankings after winning their eighth straight game Sunday in Stouffville, with an 8-6 triumph over the Spirit.

The Golden Hawks also lead the Ontario Junior Hockey League with a record of 37-5-2-0, and sport the best offence in the entire CJHL with 219 goals scored in 44 games. The Greater Sudbury Cubs of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League stand second in the CJHL rankings, while the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League sit third, the Edmunston Blizzard of the Maritime Hockey League fourth, and the OJHL’s East Conference leaders, the Leamington Flyers, fifth. Another OJHL squad, the Toronto Jr. Canadiens are in eighth place among the 118 CJHL teams.

In Stouffville, the Golden Hawks opened the scoring on the power play 8:28 into the first period when Taeo Artichuk connected from Devin Mauro and David Fournier.

The Spirit (25-15-0-4) tied it on the power play with 41 seconds left in the opening period when Griffen Boyle scored his first of three goals on the game, with David Paglia and Lachlan Wells assisting.

Trenton reclaimed the lead 57 seconds into the middle frame when Jamie Darlison scored from Thomas Kuipers and Isaiah Shantz.

Stouffville then rattled off three straight goals in a 2:57 span to take a 4-2 lead. Boyle scored from Danny Thomakos and Ivan Mentiukov, Zachary Corte from Evan Breckles and Julian Demiglio, and Thomakos from Lucas Manikis.

The Golden Hawks then scored a pair of power play goals and a shorthanded tally to take a 5-4 lead. Kuipers scored from Darlison and Aaron Brown, Brown from Corbin Roach and Nathan Taylor, and Artichuk from Fournier and Owen McKinnon.

Stouffville tied it on the power play at 13:43 of the second when Boyle completed his hat trick from Thomakos and Breckles.

Roach put Trenton ahead 6-5 from Cooper Matthews with 1:01 to play in the second frame.

Darlison scored unassisted 5:13 into the final stanza to make it 7-5. However, Demiglio converted a Josh Bonnyman and Paglia passing play to make it a one-goal game.

But Fournier scored and empty-net marker from Artichuk with 1:23 to play to nail down the win.

Ryan Sanborn stopped 27 of 33 shots to run his impressive undefeated record to 15-0-0, while Kyle Downey turned aisde 25 of 32 shots in taking the loss.

Fournier now leads the OJHL in scoring with 37 goals and 41 assists for 78 points, while Artichuk stands third in scoring with 22 goals and 48 assists for 70 points. Sanborn is second among goaltenders with a 1.67 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

The Golden Hawks return to action Friday when they host the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (33-8-0-3). Monday, they head to Cobourg for a 7 p.m. game with the Cougars (19-17-1-6).

Dukes 11, Rangers 1

The Wellington Dukes hammered the lowly North York Rangers (5-37-1-0) 11-1 Friday at Lehigh Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Dukes (28-13-0-2) outscored the Rangers 5-1 in the second period and 6-0 in the third.

Scoring for the Dukes were Ryan Schaap (2), Cory Jewitt (2), Quinn McNamara (2), Alex Hendry, Jared McNeil, Vince Albanese, Kyle Kavc, and Ethan Murray. Assists came from Ryan Castle (4), Zander Latreille (3), Jewitt (2), Kavc (2), Carson Littlejohn, McNeil, Cole Ellis, Ronen MacFarlane, Murray, Remi Gendron, Jayden Levesque, Schaap, and Albanese.

Lucas Spano scored the lone goal for North York from John Kenney and Connor Irwin.

Dario Cantini stopped 24 of 25 shots for the win, while Noah Blitstein turned aside 39 of 50 shots in taking the loss.

Dukes 6, Buzzers 4

Sunday in Wellington, the Dukes beat the St. Michael’s Buzzers 6-4.

The Dukes held period leads of 2-1 and 5-3, before swapping goals with the Buzzers in the third period.

Sacha Trudel and McNeil both scored twice for Wellington, while Levesque and Murray each scored once. Assists came from Levesque (3), Tyler Touskalas (2), Trudel, Ellis, Colin Smith, Kavc, Riley Noble, Latreille, and McNeil.

Scoring for St. Michael’s were Keegan Driscoll (2), Anthony Francella, and Nathan McLean. Assists came from David Elmy, Hudson Cummins, Daniel Yorke, Michael D’Alessio, and Max Mahoney.

Jacob Brown stopped 44 of 48 shots to record the win, while Jonathan Frattaroli took the loss in relief of William Camputaro, allowing three goals on 13 shots. Camputaro gave up three goals on nine shots.

Wellington heads to Stouffville Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. game, and then hosts the Lindsay Muskies (16-24-1-1) Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
