A LITTLE-KNOWN scoring rule nearly came into play during the NFC Championship.
The Washington Commanders committed so many penalties that the referees nearly needed to take matters into their own hands.

In that situation, the Eagles always line up for the nearly unstoppable tush push play.
The Commanders already stopped the tush push once during the game and were determined not to let the Eagles score again.
However, Washington got a little too antsy and started jumping offsides over and over again.
The referees saw this and determined that the Commanders could be intentionally jumping offsides to gain an advantage during the play.
After the first jump offsides, the referees signaled that a player jumping over the offensive lineman could be given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
That would give the Eagles a free first down.
After another offsides penalty, the referees got on the microphones to make it known that eventually they could award a touchdown to the Eagles if more penalties came in.
The referees explained that the offsides penalties could be seen as the Commanders intentionally trying to impede the play, and they could be punished for it.
NFL fans were baffled by the whole sequence of events and shared their thoughts on social media.
“The tush push should 100% be banned. So stupid,” one fan said.
“Ban the Tush Push. It’s an illegal formation by the O line compared to where they typically align,” another fan said.
“Eagles fans can get butt hurt about this but watching the tush push 7 times within 3 yards isn’t football or fun to watch,” a third fan said.
“The tush push has become insufferable It needs to die,” a fourth fan said.

The Eagles ultimately scored on the play after the Commanders were unable to time up the snap.
NFL fans, excluding Eagles fans, clearly don’t have much love for the play, and it is possible the league could talk about banning it.
These conversations have come to life previously, but this sequence of events could bring them alive again.
