UC San Diego kept its grip on second place in the Big West men’s basketball standings after a double-digit win over UC Santa Barbara Thursday.
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones again led the Tritons in scoring with 25 points, one game after a 32-point performance in a loss against UC Riverside. This was the fourth time Tait-Jones scored at least 25 points in a contest.
twitter.com/UCSDmbb/status/1882631948922986905Head coach Eric Olen thought his players responded well after the road loss.
“I thought we were pretty dialed into the plan defensively,” Olen said in a postgame press conference. “I really liked our approach coming out of halftime not being satisfied with the position we were in.”
The Tritons came out strong in the second half and maintained their double-digit lead en route to a comfortable victory.
The season sweep over the Guachos helped the Tritons remain in contention for the Big West, keeping them one game behind the conference-leading UC Irvine.
UC San Diego hopes to put even more distance between them and schools right on its tail, which includes Cal State Northridge who visits LionTree Arena Saturday.
CSUN currently sits at fourth in the Big West standings with a 5-3 conference record, and a 13-6 overall record. Saturday is the first of two meetings between the schools, with the latter coming Feb. 27.
Saturday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. PST and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
