The Nike Extravaganza is back with its usual assortment of interesting games and talented players Friday and Saturday at Mater Dei High.
The annual event started 30 years ago. It was the first of the all-day boys basketball showcase events in Orange County.

Saturday’s best matchups are (records going into Monday): Damien (18-6) vs. San Clemente (18-4) at noon; Mira Costa (19-2) vs. De La Salle (16-2) at 1:30 p.m.; Los Alamitos (14-6) vs. Foothill (14-8) at 3 p.m.; Bishop Gorman (15-4) vs. Roosevelt (23-2) at 6 p.m.; and Mater Dei (16-5) vs. Crean Lutheran (10-9) at 7:30 p.m.

Mater Dei-Crean Lutheran has a couple of All-Orange County first-team candidates, Mater Dei junior sharp-shooting guard Luke Barnett and Crean’s high-jumping forward Jacob Majok. Barnett this season broke the Mater Dei single-game scoring record with 55 points in a Desert Holiday Classic game.
Players to watch from the non-Orange County teams include Roosevelt senior guard Brayden Burries, Bishop Gorman senior guard Nick Jefferson, Damien sophomore guard Eli Garner and Mira Costa senior forward Eneasi Piuleini.
