In his first season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jeremiah Smith has taken the college football world by storm.
The freshman put up eye-popping numbers for the Buckeyes this season. He led the Big Ten with 14 receiving touchdowns and also amassed 1,226 receiving yards this season. Both of those marks are freshman records.
There’s a legitimate argument to make here that Smith is already the best receiver in the conference. It seems likely that he’ll be one of the best receivers in Ohio State’s history. He’ll definitely be a major factor in the National Championship game against Notre Dame.
MORE ON SMITH: Here’s how he’s related to one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL
If you’re getting excited about the possibility of Smith playing in the NFL — potentially for your favorite team — you should probably hold your horses.
We’re a long way away from that.
Smith isn’t eligible to enter the NFL draft this season and he won’t be for a while. Here’s more from the NFL:
“To be eligible for the draft, players must have been out of high school for at least three years and must have used up their college eligibility before the start of the next college football season. Underclassmen and players who have graduated before using all their college eligibility may request the league’s approval to enter the draft early.
Players are draft-eligible only in the year after the end of their college eligibility. “
So there you have it, folks. Smith might look ready to go to the next level today, but he’ll have at least two more seasons at Ohio State before we can even have that conversation.
