MACY’S has confirmed the exact 66 locations that will be closing soon as part of its Bold New Chapter.
The retailer is modernizing and moving to smaller-format stores while shedding the weight of those underperforming.

Around 350 current Macy’s locations will be refurbished and updated.
Additionally, at least 30 new smaller stand-alone Macy’s will also open alongside 15 new Bloomingdales and 30 new Bluemercury stores.
It was previously expected that 65 stores would shutter by the end of January 2025 as the Bold New Chapter begins, with some having already confirmed impending closures during the holiday season.
For example, a Macy’s just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota, noted it would cease operations by February.
Another in Salem, Oregon, will be axed by the end of March.
The estimated closure count had been updated twice before during earnings calls.
The original number for the New Year was 50 but it was then updated during a September 2024 earnings call to 55.
SAY GOODBYE
Macy’s executives bumped it up again to 65 during a third-quarter earnings call, but nothing was confirmed until recently.
The exact list of 66, not 65, Macy’s stores set to close over the next eight to 12 weeks has been revealed, per Axios.
Liquidation sales have already begun, and customers across 22 states will be affected.
CEO Tony Spring had recently noted on an earnings call that the closures would be definite sometime in January.
Spring also emphasized that the shutdowns were a necessity, not only because the locations were “less productive,” but because it would bring in between $600 and $700 million for the company to continue updating and improving its other stores.
“At the start of the closure strategy [we] said we had locations that were less profitable and less productive, and we wanted to monetize them as soon as possible,” he told investors.

“So the fact that we are closing more stores this year is a reflection of the fact that our assets have value and that even in this less stable market, we are transacting.”
SALES STRUGGLE
The Bold New Chapter plan from Macy’s comes as it has faced less-than-optimal sales recently, with a 2.4% decrease year over year to about $4.7 billion in the most recent fiscal quarter.
Spring said that Macy’s shopping experience “can and should be better” while speaking about the plan at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show in New York City.
He added that it provides a real “opportunity to reimagine the Macy’s Inc. portfolio.”
At least 50 Macy’s stores have already begun their makeover recently, according to the CEO.
“We picked 50 stores and said, ‘Let’s focus on those 50 stores, let’s up our game in terms of merchandise assortment,'” Spring said during the National Federation event.
Macy’s isn’t alone in its mass closure and adjustment plans, either.
Competitors like Kohl’s recently confirmed a string of 27 shutdowns.
JCPenney also closed several locations in 2024, with more planned for this year.
