“I think the key is preventive," said Levi Torres, CEO of High 5 Plumbing. "Don’t wait until you have a problem.”

Torres plans to have a crew of 45 technicians on standby for the weekend knowing the risk of frozen or busted pipes increases when the colder weather moves in.

“The number one call we get is their pipes are currently frozen. They haven’t busted yet, said Torres. "If you can catch them before they burst we can give you a lot of tricks and tips to thaw them out.”

He said letting a little stream of water drip out of your faucet is just one tip to protect your pipes and save money.

"A little more expensive gas bill will save a lot more money than a busted water line," Torres said. “So if you raise your temperature in your home and you open the cabinet doors. You leave the water trickling a little bit in the faucet then you can prevent it before it becomes a problem.”

He said that just because your house didn't freeze last year doesn't mean it won't this year.

"You have to remember the insulation value in your house every year its older the insulation value drops a little bit," said Torres. "So, if your house was very insulated 10 years ago and didn’t freeze it's possible 10 years later the insulation doesn’t hold the same value."

Last year when Denver had consecutive days of dangerously low temperatures Torres told FOX31 they responded to record calls

Torres said, "There was actually 876 leads for frozen water lines last year that week it froze."

The repairs can also be costly.

“A single repair can be as cheap as $120 but we’ve had to repipe entire houses because they had so many bursts," said Torres.

Over 3 days below freezing: What to expect for the incoming hard freeze

He offers more tips to prepare for the incoming hard freeze.

“Make sure none of your sprinklers are on and all the hoses are disconnected," said Torres. "Make sure you don’t have anything tied to your water system that's accessible to outside air.”

The first thing you want to do if a pipe burst is shut off the water to avoid a lot of property damage. If you don't know how to make the repairs on your own, call an expert for help.
