DENVER (KDVR) -- A squirrel likely tripped a fuse and caused a "boom" near a Boulder elementary school that led to the school being placed on secure perimeter, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday afternoon.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office was on the scene at Douglass Elementary investigating possible shots fired in the area North 75th Street and Baseline Road. The sheriff's office posted on X just before noon that deputies were at the elementary school.

The sheriff's office posted on X at 12:42 p.m. they learned from Xcel Energy about the squirrel tripping the fuse and that the elementary school has resumed normal operations.

The sheriff's office posted that the school was on secure status, meaning doors were locked but learning was uninterrupted. The campus is secure and students are safe, according to the sheriff's office.

FOX31 spoke with the sheriff's office who said there was a reported "boom" in the area. Deputies were searching but they said they hadn't found anything criminal.

According to the Boulder Valley School District, law enforcement was searching around the building and people shouldn't come to the school until the situation is resolved.
