Winter storm starts Friday with snow, ice and freezing rain in the Charlotte area ...Middle East

NORTH CAROLINA (PINPOINT WEATHER) -- Today is a PINPOINT WEATHER ALERT as the winter storm we’ve been advertising all week arrives this afternoon. Temperatures start off in the 20s and will peak in the low to mid and upper 30s from uptown into our mountain counties.

Winds will be light and variable as the massive winter storm tracks across our Gulf States and aims for the Carolinas.

Look for snow to start west of I-77 with a small amount of rain mixed in early in the afternoon. Snow should take over for uptown and points north while areas south of I-85 likely see more rain and sleet than snow through the afternoon.

Rain and snow will transition into freezing rain as we approach the late afternoon and evening hours. The ice will intermittently linger overnight into Saturday, leaving behind a glaze and hazardous travel for Saturday morning.

Snow totals can be close to an inch on the low end and up to 2 inches on the high end for Charlotte. Our mountain counties will see higher amounts, somewhere in the range of 2 inches to 4 inches with higher amounts in some areas. When it comes to the ice, I’m thinking we’ll see a light glaze to about a tenth of an inch of ice south and east of Uptown. Some local amounts might get close to a quarter of an inch, which will cause some concerns for power outages overnight.

Saturday will hold on to a few lingering snow showers in our western-facing slopes with cold air sticking around for the rest of the weekend. 40s will finish off the weekend and kick off the work week with dry, sunny, and below-normal conditions lasting through Wednesday.
