Some curvy questions for Bill Belichick.
The new (72-year old) Carolina football coach continues to do surprising things in his first month on the job.
The latest is going into high schools in North Carolina, some in rural areas, and walking the halls with athletes he might like to recruit. Is this a dead period in football or is Chapel Bill just doing what he wants regardless of rules that may be in place?
We all expected him to recruit mostly on campus, where the best prospects will meet with their position coaches and tour facilities, then decide who is potentially a championship caliber player at UNC. Or is his roadshow just for publicity.
And will he have any problem getting high school seniors and transfers into school here? The Carolina undergraduate admissions office has been known to tangle with coaches who wanted certain recruits on the academic borderline to be accepted.
What about players who have attended junior college or multiple schools under the transfer portal system. Will classes they took at their prior schools count as credits they must have to enroll at Carolina? When Bubba Cunningham and Trustees say they want football to be the best, like other things, will admissions go along?
And what about the persistent rumors that NFL teams are still after the Hoodie? The latest is his former championship quarterback Tom Brady helping the team he now owns a part of (Las Vegas Raiders) luring Belichick out of college coaching and back to the NFL.
The Atlanta Falcons now know they should have hired Belichick when they had the chance last spring, and rumors remain that teams like the Cowboys and Jaguars are interested in him on his terms. Would he jump out of college ball back to the pros?
That seems unlikely after his oldest son Steven has joined the Tar Heels’ staff, likely as defensive coordinator. And second son Brian is apparently set to come just as general manager Mike Lombardi’s son Matt has been hired as an experienced college coach.
Belichick is reportedly looking for a house to rent, rather than buy. Is that a sign that he COULD leave if UNC won’t bend enough to make football a true training ground for NFL careers? All the offspring that have been hired could just tag along to the next destination.
And, frankly, how long will the future NFL Hall of Famer stay at Carolina after his $10 million buyout turns into $1 million on June 1 of this new year? What is he expecting right out of the gate – a winning season or a bowl game or an ACC championship?
It could come together smoothly, but signing professional contracts doesn’t have anything to do with academic potential, just maybe an aptitude test tilted to smarts on the field of play.
Big change and a new day. We should know more by spring practice. Maybe.
