— Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) January 8, 2025Known to the baseball world mostly for his time with the Baltimore Orioles, Matusz was very briefly a Chicago Cub during that magical 2016 season. He is remembered best for starting what went on to become one of the greatest regular season games of most of our lives:
The early deficit, the comeback, Travis Wood’s catch in left field, the crazy 9th, and Jon Lester’s walk-off bunt. What an unbelievable game that was, which came at the tail end of a rare down month for that year’s team (they’d lost 15 of their last 26). Cubs fans will always have affection for the name “Matusz” because of the positive associations with that game.
That was ultimately the final big league appearance of Matusz’s career, which ended after parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues.
My heart goes out to his family and friends, and I hope they can find peace at some point through what I expect must be a terribly difficult time.
