The House Democratic Caucus voted Tuesday to appoint Rep. Mike Levin (D-Dana Point) to serve on the House Appropriations Committee, which distributes federal resources to districts across the country for important local projects.
Levin will be the only member of the committee from San Diego and Orange counties.
The Appropriations committee is responsible for the legislation that funds most federal departments and agencies and is considered to be one of the most powerful committees in Congress. This funding can support job creation, economic growth, security and more.
“I’m honored to be appointed to the House Appropriations Committee which is tasked with allocating federal funds to districts to tackle pressing challenges from climate change to homelessness,” Levin said in a press release. “As the only member from San Diego and Orange counties on the committee, I look forward to building on my successful record of bringing over $1 billion in federal funding to the 49th Congressional District since entering Congress.”
Following his appointment, Levin said he will use his position to fight for investments into clean energy, housing, infrastructure, public safety and veterans’ services.
He also said he would focus on targeting resources towards issues faced by his district like nuclear waste removal, sand replenishment efforts, protecting the rail corridor, and safety and barracks improvement at Camp Pendleton.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee on a bipartisan basis to deliver results for Southern California,” Levin said.
Levin was also recently selected to serve as chair of the Committee on Caucus Rules for the 119th Congress, previously known as the Committee on Caucus Procedures. The panel is responsible for recommending changes to Democratic Caucus rules to enhance the effectiveness and diversity of the House Democratic Caucus.
Since Levin was elected to Congress in 2018, he has served on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. He was re-elected in November.
