Skyloft and Bodega restaurants in Laguna Beach close ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

A truck loaded heat lamps. A commercial espresso machine sat just outside the back door. And a handwritten closure note was taped to the front door. This was the scene outside Skyloft and Bodega Laguna Cocina & Cantina, which closed at the start of the new year.

The websites and social media accounts for both restaurants have also gone dark.

Neither the restaurants’ owner, Ivan Spiers, nor a representative could be reached for explanation as to why the eateries closed.

Opening in 2015 inside the historic Heisler building, Skyloft took over the site of the former Rock ‘N Fish location. Noted for its rooftop views and bustling nightlife scene with live music, Skyloft most recently hosted a holiday-themed pop-up bar before shuttering.

The short-lived Bodega concept, located on the lower floor of the shared building, replaced Spiers’ Laguna Fish Company concept in October 2024.

Both venues, found across the street from Hotel Laguna, were founded by restauranteur Spiers, who owns and operates other Laguna Beach staples like Mozambique and Ristorante Rumari, as well as Daryl’s House in New York.

Spiers’ restaurants have helped employ many service workers over the years in the coastal enclave. As Laguna Beach writer Diane Armitage, who first reported on the closures, noted, “Aside from pouring millions into his rooftop and live music concepts, Spiers is also one of the town’s largest employers — just two resort hotels provide more jobs in Laguna Beach above Spiers, and this doesn’t include the hundreds of musicians hired over the 20 years he’s been a Laguna Beach fixture.”

No word yet if either eatery will reopen or what might replace the now-vacant venues.
